The Commercial Group was hosted by Kingston Smith who took us through 'The Kingston Smith Annual Survey' which explored financial trends in the agency business, whilst Mark Clark, JFDI presented the 'JFDI New Business Barometer' results and implications for the year ahead at the New Business Group. Our first Talent Group discussed a range of topics affecting the industry including staff retention and turnover, training, structures within businesses and client behaviours. We welcomed Sophie Devonshire, author of 'Superfast - Lead at Speed' to our CEO Breakfast, sponsored by Opia Risk. Sophie gave the group tips on setting the right pace and being brave when you are running an agency or a consultancy. All groups were thoroughly engaging and insightful.

Future Leaders

We welcomed 4 new Future Leaders to the Future Leaders Advisory Board. A vibrant cross-discipline group of employees from MAAGs’ affiliated agencies who represent from the “ground up”. Already making a difference to the community and the industry as a whole. Future Leaders were responsible for putting Mental Health and Wellbeing on the MAAG agenda for 2019. The following subjects continue to be a focus:
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Entrepreneurism
  • Creativity
  • Diversity
  • Education
GreenJam kicked off MAAG's 2019 Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme

This GreenJam event was called "How to thrive under Pressure". Our panelist's included, Chris Martin CEO of The Mix Charity, George Bettany Founder, Sanctus- the world’s first mental health gym
, Gillian Ward Director of People, RPM and our MAAG Future Leader, James Deshays Account Director, ignis with International Keynote Speaker and Mental Health Consultant, Petra Velzeboer chairing the session.

The audience were asked whether they felt that there was a lack of support of mental health within agencies and we were shocked to see that 95% attendees raise their hands. Clearly this is a big issue that our industry faces and together we need this to change.

Research states that Mental Health is a major issue in the workplace today with 1 in 6 reporting a common mental health problem on a weekly basis and there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety reported in the UK in 2013. Agency life can be tough, dealing with deadlines, demanding clients and all the other pressures of building a career in today’s ‘always on’ society.

Panelist James Deshays states "we all have mental health, just like we have physical health. So we need to look after the mind as much as we do the body"

The session explored what tools could be used to help manage stress in the workplace? How can you recognise the symptoms and support peers by training up 'Mental Health First Aiders' amongst introducing other initiatives within our organisations.

MAAG have put together a 2019 programme for Mental Health and Wellbeing to support our Member Agencies. More to follow.

An audience with David Wethey, author of 'The Very Idea' and Jon Leach, The Idea Economist taught us how to use our brain's better.

Ideas are the source of all progress, growth and change in the world. Problem solving, critical thinking and creativity are becoming the three most important workplace skills. David discussed practical tips on how to use your Idea Brain better. He talked about his extensive experience in the agency ideas business, the last 30 of which have been running pitches. Jon demonstrated Idea Economics in action and shared examples of the maths that help quantify creativity. Thank you to Geometry Global for hosting.
