CV tips

To be great not only needs a good mind but the ability to organise and roll your sleeves up. That's why along with high academic achievement your CV needs to show more, what have you done with your spare time? Organised events? Clubs? Sport? Work placements? DJ-ing? Fashion shows? Charity? Your CV needs to show entrepreneurial spirit and get up and go.
View your CV as a marketing tool and let it showcase you. Here are 10 do's and don'ts when CV writing: -
- The maximum length for a CV should be 2 pages - make it simple and concise
- Make the chronology clear
- Put "work experience" and "achievements" in one section called "experience", that way you can put relevant, interesting items nearer the top to engage the reader quickly.
- Always be specific with experiences, how much money did you make, how many people attended, which brands did you work on.
- Never use personal statements and don't state what you can do - give examples instead!
- Never use phrases like "organised meetings" or "dealt with senior people", we expect you to be able to do this.
- Do not use a "career goal" section to pad out a boring CV.
- If you put interests on your CV make them engaging, full of spirit, "reading and music" don't tell the reader much.
- Tailor your CV to the company and role you are applying for - one size will not fit all.
- Sounds obvious but triple check for spelling and grammar mistakes!
